Short biography

I graduated in sinology at the University of Bucharest with a thesis on language planning and the process of implementing the standard Chinese language in Chengdu. I obtained my PhD degree in cultural anthropology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, with a dissertation on globalization and local aspects in the image of womanhood constructed in two PRC editions of international women's magazines – Cosmopolitan and Elle. My research is located within the disciplines of cultural studies and cultural anthropology, and my main interests focus on texts of popular culture (linguistic, visual and cinematic), which I approach within the frameworks of discourse analysis and grounded theory. I am currently working on a project concerning the construction of a local Taiwanese identity in contemporary popular culture. I have written on the image of women in mainland Chinese popular culture (fashion and lifestyle magazines, TV series), and Taiwaneseness (issues related to history and memory, generations and ethnicity) in films from the 1990s and the recent years, tourist souvenirs and graphic novels. I spent three years in China with language scholarships and as Senior Scholar, participated in short-term training courses for instructors of Chinese, and was awarded a Taiwan Fellowship to conduct research as Visiting Scholar at the Academia Sinica Institute of Sociology (February-October 2014).
