Short biography

I am currently a PhD student in Film Studies at King College London, working under Professor Chris Berry. My thesis title is “Second Generation Taiwan New Cinema (TNC) and Realism in Cinema.” My research is focused on how TNC shows its realist turn from Bazinian realism to fantastic realism after the lifting of martial law in 1987. I am particularly interested in films showing the feature of going across the boundaries between reality and the illusory world. It is a shared feature of second generation TNC filmmakers, such as Chang Tso-chi, Tsai Ming-liang and Yee Chih-yen. I am also interested in comparing them with the sixth generation filmmakers in China, such as Jia Zhang-ke or Wang Xiao-shuai, to investigate a broader inclination of the realist turn in Chinese-language films made after the 1990s. I can be contacted at k1463407@kcl.ac.uk.
