Centre of Taiwan Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies

The Taiwan Studies Programme at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) was established in 1999 and upgraded to the Centre of Taiwan Studies in 2006. It has become one of the most active Taiwan Studies academic centres in the world. Its contribution to European Taiwan Studies was recognized with the award of the Prize of the French-Taiwanese Cultural Foundation in 2008 and the ROC’s Friendship Medal for Diplomacy in 2011.

The Centre focuses of four core Taiwan Studies projects (1) Taiwan Studies teaching, (2) Taiwan Studies academic events, (3) Academic cooperation with other Taiwan Studies institutions, (4) Publication in the field of Taiwan Studies.

(1)    Taiwan Studies teaching: SOAS offers the widest range of Taiwan Studies postgraduate courses of any institution outside Taiwan, with courses on Taiwan’s politics, economics, film, society & culture and languages. These are available to students taking any SOAS postgraduate degree. We also offer a MA degree in Taiwan Studies, the only such English language degree in the world.

(2)    SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies runs regular academic seminars during term time, its popular Taiwan Studies Summer School and at least one international collaborative conference per year.

(3)    We work together with a range of academic institutions in Taiwan, Europe and the US to promote both Taiwan Studies conferences and teaching projects.

(4)    Most of our international conferences are designed with the goal of producing important Taiwan Studies academic publications. We also promote Taiwan studies publication through the Routledge Research on Taiwan book series.
