About the local organizer
The Oriental Institute (OI) is a public research institution and one of the two leading research institutes in Oriental Studies within the Czech Republic. Established in 1922 under the auspices of the first president of Czechoslovakia, Prof. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the OI is a part of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS), an umbrella research institution directly financed by the Government of the Czech Republic.
At the moment, the OI consists of the Department of Near East, South Asia and East Asia, and has a faculty of over twenty researchers focusing on history, religion, culture, language and politics of the Arab World, China, India, Israel, Southeast Asia, Inner Asia, Turkey, and the ancient Near East. The Institute also facilitates outreach of its expertise to various state institutions and the public. Recently the OI has opened a Research Center at the Institute of History and Philology (Academia Sinica). The Center will provide office space and institutional support to researchers working on a variety of topics related to East and Southeast Asia who wish to conduct research in Taipei.
A number of renowned experts in Oriental Studies were affiliated with and carried out their research in the OI, such as Hittitologist Prof. Bedřich Hrozný, Indologist Vincenc Lesný, Egyptologist František Lexa, Arabologist Alois Musil, and Iranologist Jan Rypka. Sinology is traditionally among the OI’s strongest fields of expertise. One of the founders of Czech Sinology, Prof. Jaroslav Průšek, was the OI’s researcher and director for more than two decades until shortly after the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the countries of the Warsaw Pact in 1968. During this period, Průšek and his colleagues and students, who formed the first generation of Czech Sinologists, turned the OI into a world-renowned Sinological research institute.
The Oriental Institute publishes two academic journals. Archiv orientální (ArOr, ISSN 0044 8699), is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal published in English. It was founded in 1929, and it focuses on the culture, society, history, religion, language, and literature of the Near East, Asia, and Africa in past and present. Content is indexed in both Thomson Reuters Art & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and Elsevier’s Scopus. It is also accessible via EBSCO and ProQuest.
Nový Orient (New Orient, ISSN 0029-5302) is a Czech language peer-reviewed academic journal founded in 1945. It publishes research articles on history, religion, culture, language and politics of Asian and African countries in the past and present.

How to get there from the hotel?
Take tram no. 9 from the entrance of the hotel and get off at the stop “Národní divadlo” (National Theatre).
The journey takes about 12 min. The entrance of the building is across the street from the tram stop.
Format of the conference
No discussants are allocated in order to maximise floor discussion. Hence we would like to remind speakers that the format shall be:
- 45 min speech +15 min discussion for keynote speakers
- 15 min for each paper presentation + 30 min for panel Q&A
- MA panels have 10 min for each presenter + 30 min for panel Q&A

Submission of Draft Papers
We will circulate draft papers among participants in order to maximise floor discussion.
Please submit your paper as a PDF or Word document by 20 March 2016 online via the EATS website.
Please also send a copy to info@eats-taiwan.eu (subject: submission of SURNAME, Given Name).
Late submission will affect the chances of obtaining travel grants and free hotel accommodation.
Papers should not exceed the length of 7,000 words. We would be grateful if you do not change the title and abstract.
Presenters for MA panels do not need to submit full papers.
Young Scholar Award
All the candidates who were successfully accepted as panellists for ordinary panels and wish to apply for the YSA, please submit the full paper between 7,000-9,000 words by 29 February 2016 (see above for submitting methods). The conference organisers will cover two nights of accommodation (30-31 March 2016) for presenters and panel chairs (single use). If a paper is written by more than one person, co-authors should decide which person between you is to be covered. Extra days or extra cost for double rooms must be covered by the presenters and communicated individually with the hotel in advance.
It is extremely important to note that all the participants must contact the hotel directly (info@hotelolsanka.cz) by 26 January 2016 to inform the hotel (1) the dates of the presenter’s stay and (2) whether or not the presenter travelling with company requesting a double room. You also need to give the hotel the exact names as in the passports of the people who are staying in the hotel. In your communication with the hotel, please let them know you belong to “EATS 2016”.
If participants wish to use different hotels, the organisers do not object. However EATS cannot cover the two nights of accommodation promised if you stay elsewhere. Please contact Ann Heylen (aheylen26@gmail.com; subject: accommodation + your name) by 26 January 2016 if you decide not to use Hotel Olšanka.
Hotel cancellation policy: we are obliged to keep you informed that if you have confirmed your attendance with EATS and booked accommodation but cancelled at the last minute and without reason, you will have to pay for the cost of your booking and we will not refund the cost for the extra nights paid.
TRANSPORTATION
1) from Václav Havel Airport
- a) by public transport
Take bus no. 119 to Nádraží Veleslavín stop (final stop), then change to the metro. For the hotel, get off at Flora metro station and take tram no. 5 (tram stop is situated in front of the Flora shopping mall) or bus (bus stop is situated on the side of the Flora shopping mall), and get off at the next stop (Olšanské náměstí). It is also possible to walk from the metro station. It takes roughly 10 min and is down the hill.
- b) by taxi (fare roughly 500-700 CZK)
2) from Main Railway Station
Exit the station and turn right. You may take any tram (no. 5, 9, 26) leaving the stop there (do not cross the tram tracks) and get off at “Olšanské náměstí” (the 3rd stop). The hotel will be just in front of you.

MEALS
Lunches will be arranged in a nearby restaurant, Café Slavia (Address: Smetanovo nábřeží 1012/2) on 31 March (Thursday) and 1 April (Friday) for the participants and observers who have paid the conference registration fee. Participants can choose from two daily menus. Each menu will have three options (including a vegetarian choice). Drinks are not included.
Conference participants are also invited to a welcome dinner on 30 March (Wednesday) at Galerie Café Louvre (Address: Národní 22, Prague 1).

POST-CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES
