Dr. Colin Alexander is Senior Lecturer in Political Communications at Nottingham Trent University within the School of Arts and Humanities. He completed his PhD at University of Leeds under the supervision of Prof. Gary Rawnsley on the topic of China and Taiwan’s public diplomacy in Latin America. In 2013 he was a Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Research Fellow studying Taiwan’s public diplomacy in the Caribbean. Dr. Alexander is the author of two monograph books: China and Taiwan in Central America: Engaging Foreign Publics in Diplomacy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and The Raj and World War II: The Indian Civil Service, Broadcasting and Famine (Oxford University Press, 2019). He is currently working on a historical research project re-examining the derecognition of Taiwan by the United States in 1978.

About the School of Arts and Humanities and Nottingham Trent University

The EATS conference 2019 will be hosted by The School of Arts and Humanities at Nottingham Trent University. The School is made up of four departments, including Journalism and Media, where Dr. Alexander has his lectureship. The department’s Head is Dr. Mark Dunford. Since 2015 the School has been led by the Dean, Angela Brown, who has developed a range of international partnerships including the opening of a small campus in Beijing at Communication University of China in 2016. The School offers BA undergraduate degrees, MA postgraduate taught and research degrees and PhDs to a multinational cohort of students in subjects including Media, Communications, Film and TV, History, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Global Studies, International Relations and a host of modern languages including Mandarin.

Nottingham Trent University can trace its origins to 1843 with the establishment of the Nottingham Government School of Design which still exists within the university today. It is the 13th largest university in the UK with around 30,000 students split over four campuses. In 2018 The Complete University Guide placed Nottingham Trent as the top ‘post-1992’ University in the UK. The University was awarded the title of University of the Year at the 2017 Times Higher Education awards and the Modern University of the Year by the Sunday Times in the same year. In 2018 The Guardian placed Nottingham Trent as the 16th best university in the country.
