Deadline 31 October 2024
The Taiwan Studies Young Scholar Award (YSA) is open to applicants who are currently enrolled on a Master’s Degree or a PhD programme, or who are within three years of having submitted their PhD dissertation but are not currently in a full-time lectureship. Applicants are encouraged to, but not restricted to, relate their research broadly to ‘Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific’, the theme of the 22nd Annual Conference of the European Association of Taiwan Studies (EATS). Please consult the Call for Papers document for details on the conference theme. Applicants must be current EATS members. EATS board members are ineligible to apply.
Styling
Papers should be written in English, single-authored, and 7,000–9,000 words long. The word count should include a 250-word abstract, footnotes, and a bibliography/references. Applicants should use Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5 spacing, and APA 7th edition referencing for styling the paper.
Submission
Applicants submitting to the YSA are not allowed to submit to regular panels at the 2025 EATS Conference. Applicants can EITHER submit a written paper to the YSA OR submit an abstract to the 2025 EATS Conference. They also cannot submit different research to both. Research papers submitted for the YSA must be original and unpublished. However, applicants may submit papers that are under review for publication in a scholarly journal at the time of the 2025 EATS Conference.
Deadline
Applicants should submit their covering letter and the paper as two files to https://www.conftool.net/eats2025 by 31 October 2024.
Extension
Submissions will be evaluated according to their relevance to the field, originality, clarity of methodology, quality of presentation, and respect for quotation rules. The EATS Board will strive to announce the review result by 15 February 2025 after a double-blind external review process, and will nominate no more than three finalists. The finalists will be invited to present their papers at the 22nd EATS Annual Conference at Palacky University Olomouc, Czechia, on 20–22 June 2025. During the conference, their oral presentations will be further assessed.
Award
The final results will be announced at the closing ceremony of the 2024 EATS Conference. Each prize winner will be presented with an official certificate and a monetary award.
Funding
YSA finalists will receive a partial reimbursement of travel and/or accommodation fees during the conference as per EATS Conference regulations and subject to EATS financial constraints. Absence from the EATS Conference will be considered as withdrawal from the competition.
